The Origin of Fokker

The Origin of Fokker

I refer to my converzation with someone who misspelled Fokker as Focker, and it led me to write this article.

Fokker, a Ducth aircraft manufacturer, is undoubtedly one of world’s major aviation manufacturer besides Airbus, and Boeing, and it is one of the oldest one (been manufacturing aircraft since 1912. It has long lagging behind Boeing and Airbus in filling the world market, and now has a stiff competition with Bombardier (Canada), and Embraer (Brazil).

Not only producing commercial aircraft, it also participated in building jet fighters with the US.  It has also entered the aerospace sector since the 70′s. Over 100 types of aircrafts have been developed and produced by Fokker (40 types were produced and used during and for World War I). Garuda Indonesia was once the loyal customer of Fokker by the use of legendary Fokker F-27s, and F-28s from the 70′s to mid 80′s.

Various airlines from every corner of the world use Fokker for their fleets.

So?

Anthony H Gerard Fokker

Not so many people know that the founder of Fokker Aerospace Group, Anthony Herman Gerard Fokker was born in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia on April 8, 1890.

FYI, Fokker went into bankruptcy in 1996, maintenance and repair work were taken over by Stork Aerospace (now Fokker Aerospace Group). KLM who were also loyal customer of Fokker aircrafts officially withdrawn all of its Fokker fleet in March 2010 (last week actually).

I might add Fokker’s bankruptcy happened in January 1996! Remnants of the company were bought by Stork N.V. and one tiny part continued as Dutch Space.

Fokker, a Ducth aircraft manufacturer, is undoubtedly one of world’s major aviation manufacturer besides Airbus … not IS, but WAS. Indeed, it made many good planes: F27, F28. During WW1, as the Netherlands was neutral, Fokker supplied the German Luftwaffe with Fokker D’s series. The rumor was that the Dutch government approached IPTN to sell Fokker assets in order to save it. (Cool, IPTN-Fokker BV ))) But, Habibie did not see any interest.
