The First Indonesia-Made Attack Jet?

The First Indonesia-Made Attack Jet?

In terms of mastering aviation technology, Indonesia has long been known as the only country in Southeast Asia to produce and develop its own aircrafts. However, in terms of marketing its home-made aircraft, we have to admit that we are lagging behind Brazil, who develops EMBRAER and markets it worldwide.

These recent years, however, some countries had turned their head to Indonesia’s aircraft products, namely Malaysia, Pakistan, UAE, Philippines, and South Korea, and some other. CN-235 (pictured below) is likely to hit broader market in years to come as now more people become aware of its reliability. Malaysia will add another four in addition to its existing CN-235 in its airforce fleet (source).

You must be wondering, with all this capacity and technology, why hasn’t Indonesia developed a jet fighter?

Well, according to one reliable source, Indonesia will soon develop its own jet fighter with South Korea. Here’s the points :

1. Initial cost will be $8 billion, and is likely to be funded jointly by both countries

2. It is A T-50 Golden Eagle jet fighter, and according to Indonesia’s Aircraft Industri (PT DI), Indonesia has all capacity to do the development as well as production.

3. The production is likely to be started this year, or next year at latest.

I am sooooo mad happy :)

    That’s sounds great!
But I still can’t stop wondering why haven’t we tried to build our
own automobile, which is much easier to produce and market?
Why have we let foreign automakers dominate market?
Few years back PT DI’s predecessor IPTN designed and built model
car, but where is it now?

wait.. south korea… i thought we gonna do this with china.. ah well either way its a good thing we gonna built a jet fighter. and hopefully in the near future, just like SS2, we gonna make our own jet fighter… another step to our military industry self sufficiency.
one thing still stuck at my head though, is the development of PS1 just end there.. or does pindad gonna make an smg out it??

hoping for the best, always preparing for the worst..

the problem with that good ambitions of making our own jet fighters is cliche one..
how many does our own airforce or just in the mood of rethinking aerial protections intended for our navy.. the ALRI’s own fleet air arm would be able to procured ??

    100 or 200 ??

given the fact that CN-235 rather unsuccessful acquisitions by our interior airways.. Merpati is one of the prominent case, i must say..

  8. Akhyari says:

Morko44, thanks for the comment. I think is that Indonesia has set the target that in 10-15 years to come, indonesian strategic industry will focus on domestic market, with a int’l market will not be overlooked.
The first attack jet will be made by PTDI, and it is targeted that 190 units (50 jets will be handed over to IAF (indo Airforce) will be produced in 7 years. The technology will use south korean one, so the blue print is already there.

    Salam,

Bravo, well done our Indonesian brothers. Congratulations from Bangladesh.

If Bangladesh regional airlines use Indonesian airplanes it would be awesome. Can you tell us names of some of your best civilian airplanes?

Is CN-235 used as a passenger jet? I don’t think so. Emivest from the UAE does make business jets for wealthy businessmen. Glad tidings from many Muslim countries now!

    Wassalam.

Well done Indonesia! This is a great achievement. Development costs are enourmous but then save on reselling the program. Love the design of the aircraft. We can train them to fly jet fighters on trainers and even Migs to get them ready for the action on their powerful plane. It is also very good to see competition growing in this market!
