Red DURIAN?, Yes, it is different from the ‘normal’ durian we usually eat. However it has things in common, prickly skin and the odor is very distinctive and stinging.

Eating durian is not intoxicating as it has relatively low alcohol content.
Red Durian (Durio graveolens) is a wild durians found in the forest at banks of Mahakam river, Kutai, East Kalimantan.
People of Dayak Kenyah call this a leaf durian, perhaps it is because the leaves are almost as wide as an adult’s hand.
This plant is well suited to the type of soil sediment (alluvial) for its growth, with height at 50 – 200 m above sea level.

wow, red! can this be eaten?
of course.
it is sold everywhere in Kutai, probably in other cities in east kalimantan too
at south borneo the name “papakin”
durian for gong xi fa chai, ha ha ha
Anyone know where I can find a red durian in Jakarta? Or if someone coming to Jakarta from EastKal, could you please bring me some?
–a durian lover–
Hmmmmm ….. If they sell it in Jakarta, I will surely buy it.
Maybe we can compete with Thailands Monthong or Malasia’s Duren
which can be found in many shopping places in Jakarta & vicinities.
i love durian so much!!
but i’ve never seen red durian yet…
WOW!!
more stinging then common durian??? GIMME SOME…hehehe
im interested to bring this to singapore and introduce it to all my friends. any ideals how i can buy it?when and the contacts?
i googled a bit about this red durian, and apparently they also have it in sabah, Malaysia and its surrounding.
So it’s not really indonesian native, but more kalimantan native.
correct me if i’m wrong
Gunr, it’s not only in Kalimantan, but also in Java. In Banyuwangi, it’s also available
I ate this red durian in Balikpapan last year, and , ummm, well yeah, honestly, durian medan better than red durian.
so, i googled it a little bit more
)
according to this news http://bit.ly/cOYbNK and this http://bit.ly/9M9oy3
(i hope it’s ok to put some links. otherwise feel free to delete
there are at least only 2 red durian trees in the whole banyuwangi. and only 1 tree in the whole boyolali, but plenty along the mahakam river in kalimantan.
Maybe further investigation is needed to know how these 3 trees can be in Java (is it brought there from Kalimantan? Is it originally from there?)
But with only 3 trees known in the whole java, i can only say, yes, we have it in java as well, but it is still more native to Kalimantan (including Malaysian part. i don’t know about the Brunei part)
For reference about red durian in Sabah, just google “red durian”.
Don’t get me wrong though. Most areas of Kalimantan still belong to us, Republic of Indonesia
maybe it is kalimantan native, nevertheless it’s a little bit funny if we keep claim something which is provide by nature, since it still can be manipulate by nature it self, with the common climate i am sure the red durian can be plant in any tropical land along the equator.
ah, sorry. ghiswa = gunr. i used my other nickname unconciously ^^
How does it taste Akhyari? It looks so nice, but sorry to say, I heard it doesn’t taste as good as common durian.
the natives call it buah “lai” or “lay” (i don’t really know how to spell it). i only heard it from my mom who had been live there and never taste or even see it. it’s plenty in east kalimantan, but seasonally (like “musim durian” or other fruits season, it also has its own season).. i’m curious to taste it!
Wow..what a durian!!! I hope it will be cultivated and introduced to the world soon.
Anybody wanna cultivate it?
I’ve never seen a red durian. I wonder how it tastes.
Aloha,
When is red durian season and which region in Borneo can it be found?
Thanks,
Jessica
