When we talk about development in eastern part of Indonesia, we only name Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi, as the beacon of it, and overlook other cities. I completely agree, Makassar is the largest and the most developed city in East Indonesia, however, the fastest growing city in the east is not Makassar, it’s Manado, the capital city of North Sulawesi Province.
North Sulawesi province is now in the fast track of development in line with its increasing annual economic growth. It has made significant achievements in development in line with its geographic excellence and natural resource potentials. North Sulawesi`s economic growth had always been above the average national economic growth rate where in 2004 this province oanly recorded a growth of 4.9 percent but in 2009 it had reached 8.7 percent. In the meantime, the progress made by North Sulawesi in development was inseparable from the role of the Central Government, including its success in organizing the World Ocean Conference (WOC) and Coral Trianggle Initiative (CTI) in May 2009.

i really hope that the city does strict urban planning (bunaken is really a stone throw away). apart from conserving the delicate environment, indonesian cities are notorious at being suc* at urban planning.

ditto what you said Sitonmylap.
Indonesian cities can really learn from Malaysian cities or Japanese cities in urban planning.
I hope Indonesian cities can adopt the concept of “Walking City”, cities that are good for walking instead of just good for cars…

Urban planning has been put aside for decades by the government and I don’t think the representatives also putting much concern in the matter..I hope this tendency will end now or soon and I hope Eastern Part of Indonesia can gain as much development as the western part or even better if much more..

For some cities, there are still spaces for redesign, but cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, i am not too sure.
Newly developed cities like Pekanbaru, Manado, Timika are all set to be well-planned
