Jakarta’s Very Own Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

Jakarta is very serious in the development of transportation infrastructures to ease the congestion in the city streets. Since Transjakarta busway system is not really reducing the traffic jam, Jakarta is gearing up to kick off the development of Jakarta’s very own MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system, which will be integrated with existing transportation system, as well as with other future transportation plan, like Airport Train Link and the Subways.
Pictures below show the plan of Airport Train Link Terminal in Sudirman Center, Jakarta.

I’ve visited Jakarta Province Booth in Pekan Raya Jakarta (Jakarta Fair), there was a display how will be of future MRT in Jkt. I think the train model unlikely the same with the above pictures shown in this site. It is probable like common electric train for Depok-Jkt route (do not wish to be similar as bullet train). There will be 2 stages of the development. The first stage will be commenced in 2010 and planned to be finished in 2016, with mostly from JICA’s loan. Its route planned from Ciputat Area until Dukuh Dua (Sudirman Street). The second stage is not defined yet. CMIIW

The pictures are great! They also scream “MONEY!”
We also need to figure out that if the MRT is built underground, what would happen when flooding occurs. I certainly dont want to be stuck down there when that happens.

Jakarta badly needs an MRT! the traffic in this city is horrendous esp in south jakarta! the busway doesnt really help coz it is also affected by traffic. I do hope that when i return to jakarta in the future, it would be a better place for commuters.

Well, i heard the rumor that this plan will not be realized due to the problems, but i don’t really sure that the rumor is true. Can someone please give me some reliable informations about this plan whether it’s in progress now or will never be realized? I’m so curious about this.

Its now midyear 2010 and I haven’t heard back hows this plan gonna be realized. We don’t want it to have the same fate as the monorail don’t we? And as usual, I always skeptical about transportation development in Jakarta as they always ended up discontinued or turn up as a new problem rather than solution (ie: Busway). Don’t blame me for being negative, but we know we’ve been disappointed few many times already by the govt, Am I right? But I can always dream about my Jakarta less polluted, light on traffic and have a bullet train that runs from Jakarta to Bandung in a matter of minutes. …sigh
