Sony is ready to release a new product that will compete with Microsoft Surface. The product is called ‘atracTable‘, a computer device that can eliminate the dependence of human to mouse and keyboard. Users can directly interact with the computer by touching the screen. This product can detect the arms, fingers and body movements. There is also a feature that can recognize humans based on age, sex, and detect emotions such as anger, sadness and joy. Interesting!
But hold on to your seats, people. Guess what, this idea is not new to Indonesia. Even way before Sony announced ‘atracTable’, a bright young student from STMIK AMIKOM Yogyakarta has come up with this technology. This interactive table received first prize at the Indonesian ICT Awards 2009. The innovator is Hendro Wibowo, a student of STMIK AMIKOM Yogyakarta. The tool he made was named TIWULE (Touch It With Ultimate Learning Experience).
In engineering, technology and manufacturing principles, TIWULE is similar to atracTable, using a camera as a sensor to capture motion and a projector as an interface. TIWULE is even been able to detect multi-touch, so it can be used by more than one person at the same time. In its first version, TIWULE only uses the LCD screen used as a webcam interface and uses the camera as a motion-detection sensors, and this first version did not even cost of making more than 3 million rupiah (approximately USD350).
