Nim’s Indonesian Adventure

Have you seen Nim’s Island, an American film directed by Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin? The film stars Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, and Gerard Butler. I just did so myself yesterday and there were something that caught my eyes and made me smile.

There was this part when Alexandra Rover, played by Jodie Foster is flying from San Francisco to Raratonga (Cook Islands) via Borneo (Kalimantan in Indonesia). It is very unlikely to happen because between San Francisco and Borneo the airplane will have well passed the Cook Islands. The nearest international airport that may take her to Cook Islands is Nadi in Fiji (South Pacific) and from there can fly to Cook Islands via Air Pacific. Borneo is in the Southeast Asia region. So it is crazy enough to transit in Asia while the destination is in the South Pacific island.

And when Alexandra rushes at Borneo airport, there is a sign written “Jogja Tourism”. Actually, Jogja (Yogyakarta) is in the island of Java, not Borneo.

I think, the filmmakers were just so in love and mesmerized with Indonesia that they can’t help but to include this beautiful country in the movie, no matter what it takes, although it doesn’t make any sense!

There is a simple explanation to it.
    1. The plane used is a medium-haul aircraft such as airbus 330 or boeing 737. So it has to stop somewhere to refuel.
    2. Airlines who flight directly for longhaul destination are normally suffering great deal of loss, unless it’s a very busy network. So, to avoid losses, you must stop somewhere to pick up more passenger to fill up the seats.
    3. The pilot lost his map. oh…or the navigation system was down

LOL at “no matter what it takes”. It’s usually the sinetrons using this approach, as long as the ending story is reached, whatever means to get there is taken.

No Bro, you’re got to see the movie! She had to fly from San Fransisco to Borneo on what looks to me like a medium-hail aircraft (you know I can never tell them apart) to fly on this tiny weeny plane to Raratonga (a depiction which, the people of Raratonga weren’t too pleased with as their airport can take jumbo planes)

So it wasn’t a case of refuelling, nor picking up passengers.

The navigation system was down, probably. :-)

for those who wonder, you can see it in Star Movie, airing most of the prime times.

Cool eh?! the film resembles indonesia as a country with isolated, beautiful island – altho seems the nims island is under australia? dunno..
