Most Delicious Food in the Sky

Global travel search site Skyscanner has unveiled the results of its Asia Pacific Airline Food Awards 2012, with national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, Tiger Airways and Singapore Airlines rated the best for in-flight meals by a panel of international travelers.

Garuda Indonesia piped Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, AirAsiaX and Air China, who completed the top five for the long-haul category. Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines were the only airlines to make both the top five of both the short and long-haul categories.

“Airline food is one of the reasons why travelers dread flying, especially on long journeys. This has changed tremendously and now, some even get excited about the food they are going to get. The quality of in-flight meals has definitely improved greatly as airlines now realize that a delectable meal plays an important role in attracting travelers,” Skyscanner marketing manager for Indonesia, Ira Noviani, said on Monday in a statement.

Over 200 international travelers and bloggers from across Asia Pacific were recruited as food critics in Skyscanner’s first study in Asia Pacific of the quality of onboard meals. The panel rated their in-flight meals based on taste, presentation, choice and, for those assessing low cost airlines, they also assessed the value for money.

In 2006, Garuda Indonesia launched its transformation program in an effort to increase the quality of its flights. As part of the program, the “Garuda Indonesia Experience” campaign, which promises to serve the five human senses in the pre, during and post-flight experiences, was launched. Through this campaign, travelers flying Garuda Indonesia get to enjoy scrumptious in-flight meals prepared by internationally acclaimed chefs and experience fine dining services onboard.

Garuda Indonesia is also planning to continuously improve its in-flight quality by introducing a new chef-on-board concept to its passengers in 2013.

Singapore-based Tiger Airways triumphed in the ‘low cost airline’ category, beating competition from fellow Singaporean budget carrier Scoot, AirAsia, Korean airline Jeju Air and China’s Spring Airlines who also made it into the top five ranking.

In the Short Haul category, Singapore Airlines took the top slot, closely followed by Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, and China Southern. (swd)
