It’s official now. Jakarta with the MRT

Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry announced on Wednesday that the tender process for Jakarta’s mass rapid transit (MRT) project had been opened and that the first phase of the project would be commence operations by 2016.

Tundjung Inderawan, director general for railways at the ministry, said the construction was expected to commence in the middle of the year, as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has agreed to fund the project, had approved 10 contractors in the pre-qualification stage.

Then they are scheduled to offer prices in June or July, after which the winner will be chosen and the construction can finally begin.

“This year we will start the construction, so that by mid or end of 2016 Indonesia will have an MRT,” Tundjung said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The first MRT will span 15.5 kilometers, connecting Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle in Central Jakarta. It will have seven flyovers and six subway stations.

    Great news.

I have many concerns though. Could you pass some of my suggestions to the MRT developer/authority?

    1. Seven flyovers & six subways. What shape of building it would be? Hi tech, modern or traditional? I prefer traditional with modern technologies. We have to show and mantain our country’s identity. Indonesia have 33 provinces. That means we also have 33 ethnic houses, each with its own unique shape and ornaments. So, why didn’t we adapt that? We MUST HAVE OUR OWN IDENTITY!

    2. Keep maintain its cleanliness and secure!

Thanks before. I hope you, GNFI, can pass my idea…

    Congratulation!

@tonzzz Your idea is sort of good. Since Indonesia project (such as airport) mostly maintain Indonesia ethnicity/traditional concept can attract visitors, in the mean time reflecting out identity. However, we have to admit sometimes airport ground service is not comfortable enough. Thus, a new done concept is appropriate to be applied for MRT, avoiding “mistake” as far been prevailing in airport.
Let me add my suggestion as well:
    - Maintaining sense of Indonesia ethnicity in public service doesn’t completely mean retarding service, instead combination with modern/latest technology may result “an uniqueness” that keeping reminded in mind to figure out Indonesia.

    Thank you for sharing :D
