Search Google, In Bali

Indonesia will host next month the Asean Regional Entrepreneurship Summit in Bali, a large international event that will highlight entrepreneurs’ role in job creation and economic development.

More than 200 prominent business leaders from Asean countries, India and China are expected to participate. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Google chairman Eric Schmidt will be keynote speakers.

“The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit has a goal to be a catalyst of entrepreneurship in Indonesia,” Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said on Friday.

The Asean RES will be the first follow-up from the Entrepreneurship Summit that was held in Washington DC in April 2010 and hosted by US President Barack Obama.

Google’s Schmidt was selected as a keynote speaker because of the company setting itself as a great example of the power of entrepreneurship in the world, said Chris Kanter, the chairman of Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia, which helped to organize the summit.

“Google is a global young company that was established less than 20 years ago and has become one of the biggest and the most important companies in the world,” he said.

Schimdt was Google’s chief executive for 10 years until he resigned and was replaced by co-founder Larry Page last January. He is now the company’s executive chairman.

GEPI, which was founded in January 2011 by a group of 13 prominent business leaders in Indonesia, is part of a global organization that was established from an initiative by Obama and is now a core program at the US State Department led by Hillary Clinton to help promote business growth in emerging economies.

“Indonesia is one of the main countries that will become the focus of the Global Entrepreneurship Program, because we see Indonesia is an example of emerging countries that are taking off because of entrepreneurship,” said Steven Koltai, the US Department of State’s senior adviser for entrepreneurship .

Indonesia is forecasting economic growth this year of 6.5 percent, after expanding 6.1 percent in 2010.

The conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Nusa Dua on July 22-24.
