The World Health Organization (WHO) has named Governor Fauzi Bowo as one of the recipients of the World No Tobacco Day 2011 Awards.
Upon receiving the award at City Hall on Sunday, Fauzi said the award belonged to all of the initiators and supporters of the antitobacco movement.
“To free Jakarta from tobacco’s smoke all stakeholders should support the issue,” he said.
Last year, the governor signed gubernatorial decree No. 88/2010, which outlaws smoking inside buildings and workplaces in the city. The decree faced strong opposition from smoking proponents.
Last week the city administration announced it had issued 700 warnings to building managers to comply with the decree.
Every year the organization grants the awards to individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO regions for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control, the WHO’s official website stated.
