Kulon Progo eyes Spanish Investors

TEMPO InteractiveKulon Progo:The Kulon Progo government is ready to welcome potential Spanish investors, some of whom plan to make a return visit in early July.

Kulon Progo regional secretary, Budi Wibowo, said that to accelerate Kulon Porgo economic development, the government will prioritize the first interested parties. A number of investors in the past, especially regarding the coastal megaproject, were seen not to be serious.

As an example, the Czech Republic had made a feasibility study in Kulon Progo. But then they stopped and did not approach PT Angkasa Pura anymore. As a result, the construction has been delayed and taken over by investors from India. Spain was interested in building a power plant. “They did not just offer the technology, but they were also ready to cooperate with the state power firm PLN,” Budi told Tempo yesterday.

Kulon Progo, represented by its regent Toyo S. Dipo, along with the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid, April11, made a presentation on Kulon Progo as “The Jewel of Java” to 15 big Spanish companies such as INDRA, IDOM, INECO, ACS, and INSA.

The power plant, as an alternative source of energy to PLN, has become urgently needed in the southern area of Kulon Progo. The electricity supply in the area is only 240 kilowatt. The allocation is only enough for one cold storage and an ice factory, which will be built by a Korean investor, at the Temon Special Economic Zone. “Spain will conduct a research, on the use of wind, solar or coal as sources of energy,” said Budi.

In addition, Spain will follow up on the offer to invest in constructing a steel plate factory. Spain is currently known as an exporter of steel plates.
