TEMPO InteractiveKupang:Hundreds of youth from the “World Assembly of Youth” (WAY) together with the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) in Jakarta will visit Komodo Island, West Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), this February 23-28.

They will conduct a field study on the impacts of climate change on the environment in the area and campaign on environmental preservation to protect Komodo Dragons.

“The pre-historic animals will become extinct if their habitat is not seriously cared for,” Gusti Brewon, the Youth Congress Local Committee chief, told reporters in Kupang today.

According to Gusti, Komodo Dragons are known to be able to survive in adequate sunshine. However, extreme climate changes could shorten their life cycle.

To prevent climate changes, he said, all parties must conserve the environment. Otherwise, the dragons, which are finalists in the new seven world wonders list, will be threatened. “Komodo Dragons can survive hundreds to thousands of years more. It is not impossible that climate changes could shorten their life cycle,” he said, adding the animals should not become extinct because of natural degradation and people’s irresponsible actions.
