Jakarta. Indonesia picked up a third gold medal in the Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman.
Indonesia’s last gold was delivered by Aero Sutan Aswar, who won the runabout endurance event in jet-skiing, as the national team settled for fifth place in the final medal standings.
Thailand topped the medal table with 15 gold medals and 36 overall, followed by China (12 gold and 23 total), Oman (five and 15) and Iraq (three and seven).
Indonesia ranked first in the inaugural Games in 2008 with 23 gold medals.
The 15-year-old Aero timed 32 minutes and 55.83 seconds in the first runabout endurance race and 32:04.58 in the second to clinch the gold.
Kritsada Wuttithosaporn of Thailand bagged the silver, timed at 33:25.76 in the first race and 32:34.06 in the second. Mohammad Albaz of Kuwait took the bronze.
“I knew that I had a good chance of winning because I know I have better skills now,” Aero said on Thursday.
Aero almost didn’t make it to the Games, as the Indonesia Olympic Committee (KOI) had decided that the nation had no potential for jet-skiing medal.
KOI based its decision on the country’s performance during the 2008 Asian Beach Games held in Bali, where Aero finished fourth in the runabout 800 and ski open events.
With the unwavering support of the Indonesian Jetsport Boating Association, however, Aero was finally granted a berth in the last minute.
Prior to the runabout endurance race, Aero competed in the runabout open event on Wednesday, where he finished fourth.
Indonesia’s two other gold medals came from the bodybuilders, Asrelawandi in men’s 60 kilograms and Syafrizaldi in men’s 75kg.
Aero’s gold took Indonesia’s medal total to 11 overall, which included two silvers and six bronzes.
Yessy Yosaputra secured a silver in the women’s 10-kilometer event in marathon swimming. Indonesia’s men’s team also finished runner-up in beach woodball.
Indonesia collected bronze in beach sepak takraw (women’s regu, and men’s and women’s team events), water-skiing (men’s individual trick skiing and trick skiing team overall), and beach kabaddi (women’s team).
