Indonesia’s young scientists again proved they have what it takes at the 17th International Conference for Young Scientists in Bali.

Twelve members of the Indonesian delegation received medals for their presentations, repeating the success of last year, when Indonesia was the champion in Poland.

Oki Novendra, from SMA No. 1 high school in Bogor, said the team had been determined to defend Indonesia’s title, especially since it was the host.

Oki won a gold medal in the mathematics category with his research, titled “Mathematical Explanation on the Death of Michael Jackson.”

Using mathematical calculations, he estimated how many drugs were taken by pop star Michael Jackson before his death.

Another Indonesian team member, Ilham Naharudinsyah, won best performance in the mathematics category.

In physics, Miftah Yama Fauzan and Andreas Widy Purnomo won gold medals, while Fauqia and Rizal received bronze medals. In the life science category, Florencia Vaniara won gold, while Dita Nurtjahya came away with a bronze.

Muhammad Kautsar and Dwiky Rendra Graha Subekti won gold in the environmental science category, while Dwiky also won the best-performance honor.

Sonny Lazuardi Hermawan won gold medal in the computer science category, while Aria Dhanang Dewangga won silver.

Sungkowo, director of high school development at the Ministry of National Education, said the team had been carefully selected months ago.

“Aside from their scientific ability, they were required to have good English skills,” he said.

Delegation head Monika Raharti said the students had received intensive training on how to present their projects in English. “Their presentation skills were one of the reasons for their success,” she said.

Indonesia is the first Asian country to have played host to the ICYS.

The event involved students from Belorussia, Brazil, Croatia, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Iran, England, Thailand, Laos, Nigeria, and Cambodia.
