Reading Pandji’s tweet this morning has prompted me to write this (Thanks Bro!). He wrote, and I quote…
“Gue berdoa kelak akan ada merk kafekopi Indonesia yg merajai negeri sendiri…I love Starbucks, but I’ll be even more proud of our own”
Translation: I pray that one day there will be an Indonesia coffee cafe brand who ruled his own country … I love Starbucks, but I’ll be even more proud of our own
The superior quality and the good taste of Indonesian food products is known worldwide, and more so with coffee. Just a mere mention of Java coffee, or better still, the most expensive coffee in the world, Kopi Luwak, is enough to make any die-hard coffee addicts out there salivating.
But just don’t take my word for it, ask Howard Schultz, the owner of Starbucks, who prefers Indonesian coffee to his Starbucks’ drinks!
The story was revealed by Vice-Chairman of the Chamber of SMEs and Cooperatives, Sandiaga S. Uno (Sandi), in the seminars Competency-Based Implementation of MSMEs For Local Economic Development in Bandar Lampung last month. According to Sandi, whenever Schultz comes to Indonesia, he would choose to come to a local cafe on Jl. Banceuy in Bandung rather than going to Starbucks. He hails all the way from Seattle USA, for a sip of real Indonesian coffee. That truly says something about the quality of our coffee, don’t you agree?
This according to Sandi, shows that Indonesian coffee products truly have great potential and the strength of demand by foreign countries, and it should be utilized to develop these opportunities. He cited the Lampung coffee should be properly developed and marketed to step up in the local market and abroad.
Talking about demand for Indonesian coffee from abroad, the domestic demand in South Korea continue to rise, and their favourite? Kopi Luwak, of course! Indonesian Trade Attache in South Korea, Arief Fadillah said, Korean’s Indonesian coffee demand is constantly increasing. In the year 2006 the total coffee exports to Korea reached U.S. $ 1.3 million, increased to U.S. $ 1.6 million in 2007, increased again to U.S. $ 1.7 million in 2008. August 2009 until the end of year 2009, coffee exports to Korea reached U.S.2.2 USD million. “Now, Kopi Luwak is very popular in Korea,” said Arief.
In addition Kopi Luwak, other types of specialty coffees such as Indonesian Toraja coffee is selling pretty well in Korea. He said the high interest of Korean people to coffee products from Indonesia because Indonesian coffee has a unique flavor.
