The lake Kelimutu is located at the top of Mount Kelimutu. The lake is known as the Three Colors Lake because it has three different colors, namely red, blue, and white colors are always changing along with time. Kelimutu comes from the word “keli” which means mountain and the word “mutu” which means to boil.
Local residents are believe that the colors on the lake Kelimutu has the meaning of each and have the force of nature. Blue lake (Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai) is a gathering place for the souls of young people who have died. Red lake (Tiwu Ata Polo) is a gathering place for the souls of those who have died and for life is always a crime / sorcery. While white lake (Tiwu Ata Mbupu) is a gathering place for the souls of parents who have died.
The beginning of this area was found by Van Such Telen, a Dutch citizen, in 1915. Beauty known as Y. Bouman described in his writings in 1929. A number of the suspect, the water color changes in the lake due to Kelimutu volcanic activity, refracting the sunlight, the micro-water biota, the occurrence of dissolved chemicals, and due to the reflection color of the walls and bottom of the lake.
Change color to blue water and white (now green) is made possible by changes in chemical composition of the crater due to changes in water-gas volcano, or may be caused by rising temperatures. Meanwhile, the increased concentration of iron (Fe) in the fluid causes the red color to blackish (now dark brown). The moss-green color of the biota is possible certain kinds of moss.
