Aceh province`s Sabang international seaport which is now under construction is scheduled to commence operations in 2012. The project is to support the economic growth of the Sabang Free Port and Trade Area and would have a pier with a length of 423 meters. The total length of the port`s piers was 2,600 meters and cost Rp8 trillion. The first phase of the construction covered a total length of 1,600 meters with funds taken from the state budget.

The port’s existing pier is 180 meters long and 12 meters wide, capable of accommodating a ship with dead weight capacity of up to 10,000 tons, and will be upgraded the existing pier to as much as 2.5 kilometers in length, making it larger than Singapore’s port. It will have 15 to 25 cranes to lift the containers. The planned port will be able to accommodate two large container ships.

It is said that instead of traveling through the straits to Singapore, the big carriers could transit and unload their containers in Sabang. For large ships, cruising through the busy traffic to Singapore takes two days, and another two days on the way back. Why waste four days if the ships can unload in Sabang? Using smaller vessels to transport the goods to pass through the Malacca Strait will be much more faster.
